The English department recommends Eng 107-108-109 for English and Language Arts majors; since these majors go on to take full sequences in British and American literatures, the Western literature sequence minimizes its inclusion of those texts, focusing instead on continental Europe.
The third term of the Western Literature sequence moves from the late 18th century to the modern era. We encounter a number of “isms” in this term – Romanticism, Naturalism, Realism, Existentialism, to name just a few. Fallout from the American, French, and Russian Revolutions, and a plethora of other wars, affects the literature produced in these eras. While we cannot pretend to be thorough, this term should provide students with a firm background in the types of literature and literary/social issues which were important during this time.
